Meet the Team

John Mortimer is the founder and driving force behind Millennium Running. A New Hampshire native, John launched the company in 2011 with a vision to bring world-class organization and energy to local running events—while giving back to the community that shaped his own journey.
Before becoming a race director and entrepreneur, John had a standout career in competitive running. He was a 12-time New Hampshire state champion at Londonderry High School and a 3-time high school national champion. He later starred at the University of Michigan, where he earned 7 NCAA All-American honors and won 6 Big Ten Championships. As a professional runner, he represented Adidas and Reebok, qualified for two U.S. National Teams, and was a 2004 Olympic Trials finalist in the steeplechase. He left his mark on the track with personal bests of 8:24.6 in the 3,000m Steeplechase, 7:56.1 in the 3,000m, 13:48.3 in the 5,000m and 28:46 in 10,000m. He held the New Hampshire state record for the 5K on the roads for over 25 years.
Upon returning from the track, Mortimer has run 6 marathons that include two Boston Marathons (2:26 personal best finishing 34th overall), NYC Marathon, Honolulu Marathon, Antarctica Marathon, the North Pole Marathon, and Sydney Marathon.
After a decade coaching NCAA Division I programs at Harvard, Boston College, and the University of Kentucky, John returned home to New Hampshire to start Millennium Running. What began as a single race—the Millennium Mile, co-founded in 1999 with his high school running friend, Matt Downin and older brother Andy Downin—quickly grew into the state’s largest road race management company. Today, Millennium Running produces over 30 signature events annually, operates a retail store, manages a running club, and provides timing services for nearly 100 races each year.
John’s goal has always been to bring the grandeur and professionalism of national and international events to the local level. That vision has led to remarkable community impact. Under his leadership, Millennium Running has helped raise over $2 million for local nonprofits.
John’s contributions to sport and the community have earned widespread recognition. He’s a member of the University of Michigan Track & Field Hall of Fame, Londonderry High School Hall of Fame, and the NHIAA Hall of Fame. He has also been named to the NH Union Leader’s 40 Under 40, NH Magazine’s “It List”, USA Track & Field’s Race Director of the Year, and NH Magazine’s Top 200 Most Influential Leaders.
