Guest Blog: Gone Spinning
Gone Spinning. While the old phrase is about the relaxing sport of fishing, there is nothing relaxing about today’s Spin class. It was 55 minutes of ups, downs, sprints, flats, accelerations and great music. Last week I realized that I have 12 weeks to my first half marathon of the year and immediately went online to pull down Hal Higdon’s 12 week training program. He is the old stand by for me when I need to focus and be prepared to run. Something about seeing the details of the daily breakdown as a goal that makes it easier for me to manage activity. I took the last month mostly off unfortunately but kicked into gear this week. Wallis Sands Half Marathon in Rye, New Hampshire is a great flat run to kick off the longer runs planned throughout the season. I have included my schedule for any of you interested in joining me on this journey to a healthy and better me.
In fact this week I received an email confirmation from the April Fool’s 4 Mile in Salisbury, MA. They are having the 32nd Annual running and some of you may have heard of the record holder for men. In 2004 John Mortimer ran the race in 18:33 and when I asked him, how the hell he did it, he responded I was in shape back then. Really? I think he had roller blades or something one personally. Well at least the fearless leader of the Millennium Running Social Club and the company does run and has proof of it.
This weekend a big storm is coming so the challenge that I put to everyone including me, is how will you get your workout in. On Sunday morning I leave for vacation and we have already planned our yoga and spinning classes at the hotel. In addition, I plan on getting a few miles of running in to keep on track for my half. Sunday requires a 4 mile run and that should be interesting after flying across country for the first vacation that my wife and I have had alone in a very long time. Stay strong, eat well and smile often until the next time!
