Athlete of the Month: Melissa Keating November 2012
The response to our Athlete of the Month section of the website has been truly inspiring to us. We enjoy reading all the great words you all have come up with about your fellow runners, and why they each are deserving of the Athlete of the Month award. This month we welcome you to read about our November Athlete of the Month; Melissa Keating. Nominated by her close friend Shannon Rhodes.
“I will start by saying Melissa has never won a race, but she did win her health.” Shannon began.
3 years ago Shannon began running at work. Although she invited Melissa to join her, she could tell she was reluctant. But with enough of “nagging and reassurance” Melissa began joining Shannon on those lunchtime workouts.
Beginning with a mixture of running and walking, they were able to begin with finishing 1.25 miles during their break. After slowly running further and reaching longer distances without having to walk as much, together they were able to build up to running 3-4 miles.
Shannon ended up leaving the company soon after. “ I wasn’t sure if Melissa would continue, but not only did she continue, she flourished! She got others to run with her at lunch, joining her in her weight loss journey.”
Since then Melissa has run 2 half marathons, numerous 5 and 10ks, has finished the Tough Mudder obstacle course, and has started taking (and even teaching!) some martial arts classes. As a mother of two who also works full time and recently earned a BA in Business Studies, Melissa is proof that if you put your mind to it, you can succeed.
Shannon finished with this kind note. ”The greatest thing she has done was find herself and her health. She has lost about 70lbs and now runs MUCH faster than me. I am so very proud of her.”
